maurices bbqWhile on our way going South on I-95 we make it a point to stop that different barbecue restaurants. On this trip we passed Maurice’s Barbecue in Santee, South Carolina. Now if you are a lover of good barbecue then you know that in South Carolina the people there like their barbecue fixed a certain way. These folks like their mustard barbecue sauce. If you’ve never had it you have to try it. It is a different style and it adds a little tang to pork barbecue.

Maurice’s barbecue specializes in barbecue with a mustard style sauce. There weren’t many people in this restaurant at the time and we were served right away. The menu here was very extensive. They had lots of choices of combination barbecue plates. We picked one that had a sampling of pulled pork and ribs. They had the usual side dishes that you find in a barbecue restaurant. I have to say that we were a little skeptical at first because mustard style sauce makes the meat look funny. But our reservations were unfounded because the meal was great.

The pulled pork was really good. We never had mustard style sauce before and were surprisingly pleased how well it tasted. This seems to be their claim to fame and I have to agree. And if you were going to get anything there this is what we would recommend. Now they sell lots of other barbecue choices including fried chicken, barbecued chicken, passion price, baked beans, green beans, corn, collards, mac & cheese, black-eyed peas, coleslaw, potato salad, banana pudding, and hush puppies. The hush puppies were not great but they were passable. Most of the other sides were fairly good. If you’ve never had the hash before then you might be a surprised because it is nothing to look at but it tastes good.

This restaurant is part of a chain of Maurice’s barbecue restaurants. They’re located mostly in the South Carolina area. Some of the outlets don’t have a great reputation but the restaurant in Piggie Park apparently the flagship store.

If you’re going strictly for the food that I recommend trying out this restaurant. However you should know that the owner is somewhat of an activists in the Southern tradition. He loves to display the Confederate flag in his locations. You would think that taking this stance would be bad for business (and it probably is) but they owner doesn’t care. If you don’t care then check it out. If this is an issue then stay away from this store.
