Well, the 4th of July holiday is over and we had a good time with family and friends. I had both smokers going for ribs, brisket, and butts. It was a great day weather wise. I tried the Cowboy brand of lump charcoal for the first time. I put the butts and brisket on at midnight and loaded my smoker with enough charcoal to last at least 6-8 hours. When I checked my burn in 4 hours the charcoal was almost completely gone. The Cowboy brand burns like paper. I was very disappointed in the performance of this brand.
Inspecting it further I found a fair amount of scrap lumber used in this brand. I found a lot of tongue and groove scraps and other building lumber. To say the least it was very poor quality charcoal. I don’t intend to use it again.

TC

I just had the same experience. Thought I'd try them. Coals died and made service late for a catering gig I was doing. I won't be using them again either.
Yes. Pretty sorry stuff.
I find Cowboy lump OK for grilling, decent heat, lights off its self when adding more to the fire. But for a long burn smoke, no thanks. I suggest Wicked Good Lump, pricey, but worth it.
George, where do you get Wicked Good Lump?
Lump hardwood charcoal is sooooo much better than the old style briquettes. It cooks so much hotter and with much more flavor.
Your blog appears quite informative. Can you please tell me how can I read your rss blog?
