You should be able to buy it in the outdoor section at Walmart or anywhere like that.
You need to soak the wood chips in water for awhile (maybe an hour), then put them on the hot coals.
This will add a nice hickory taste to your BBQ!

we have a gas grill.but,I still like to use our charcoal grill….when I have time.
The wood chips can be found at most any store in the same area the charcoal is found…
I simple add them to the coals once they are hot and let them burn down to embers
one summer I ended up with quite a bit of hickory wood..,,I put it in a burn pit…and then with a shovel put the embers in the grill …and just cooked with straight wood..what a difference…I still do this when we camp.
there are many gadgets to choose from (i.e. a smoke box) but I like using heavy duty tin foil and placing my chips, which I’ve soaked for 30mins, in a makeshift pillow made out of tin foil. Poke some holes in foil and place on coals. The coals which have woodchips or particles in the coal itself sometimes have a binder and I’m not sure if that’s too good for you or your food. You can find woodchips in hardware stores, Bar-b-que stores and it comes in hickory, maple, apple, etc. The purpose of putting woodchips on your coals is that it smokes the food. It’s a long process but most definetly worth the wait. I’ve smoked a turkey, chicken, ribs(both pork and beef) most everything under the sun. You can even get cedar planks for grilling fish. Hope this helps..Happy Grillin’
You can buy hickory, which is very smoky tasting, cherry wood, Apple wood (sweeter) at anyplace that has bbq’s and accessories.
Most markets carry little bags. Just soak it in some water so it won’t burn out. You want the wood to give flavor to the meat. Slow cooking is the best for large cuts. In-direct cooking for roasts and direct cooking for steaks.

Have found many good things there.
I agree with Nathalie, just make sure that you soak them real good first so they don’t burn up right off the bat, and the wet wood makes the most delicious smoke. I don’t know if you have a Krogers in Cleveland, but just about any grocery store worth its salt will have hickory chips, mesquite, apple, chips right with the charcoal and charcoal fluid. Its alot cheaper at the grocery than at a hardware store. Once you get some exp. under your belt, yoour going to LOVE smoking meat.

I go to a local Patio / Fireplace store. They have a large variety of wood. From you basic Hickory to woods like Cherry and Pecan. Walmart has the basics.
